How Consumers Are Redefining Indulgence. Welcome to the Rise of Affordable Premium Erica Gale 🇨🇦 , Senior Vice President, Franchising & Brand Development

For years, premium in food was tied to occasion. It meant a night out, a celebration, or a deliberate splurge that you planned for. Today, people still want indulgence, but they increasingly expect it to fit into everyday life. That shift is reshaping the food industry and driving the trend of “affordable premium.” Products that feel elevated through quality, flavour, and experience, without the luxury price point.

Canadian consumers are more intentional with their spending than ever before. Even in an inflationary economy, where some are cutting back on big-ticket experiences, they are not willing to give up small moments and experiences that make their day feel better. At Bento, we have seen this shift with consumers looking for products that deliver a sense of indulgence but remain convenient, approachable, and accessible.

One of the clearest examples is our new scallop lineup, the first grab‑and‑go scallop offering of its kind in Canada. Five years ago, I don’t think this product would have worked because premium ingredients like scallops were still viewed as restaurant‑only, reserved for special occasions. I am thrilled to say that we underestimated initial demand and have had to increase our supply. Ingredient quality, consistency, freshness, and convenience all shape whether something feels premium now. The success of products like scallops in grab‑and‑go is not about novelty, it is about the emotional payoff of providing for everyday indulgence.

As premium becomes more common across the industry, authenticity becomes increasingly important. Consumers are more informed on ingredients, more brand‑savvy, and more attuned to what quality actually looks like. They can quickly tell the difference between meaningful innovation and products that simply position themselves as premium without delivering a premium experience. The brands that win in this space will be the ones that elevate without over‑promising and innovate without losing credibility.

Looking ahead, the opportunity around affordable premium will only grow. The expectation is no longer just convenience, but convenience paired with quality, discovery, and indulgence. Consumers want everyday moments that feel special, and they are rewarding brands that understand how to deliver that balance. For Bento, that means continuing to push category expectations in ways that feel credible, accessible, and aligned with how people actually eat today. The goal is not to make premium exclusive. It is to make elevated experiences possible in everyday life, one small moment of indulgence at a time.
